Fonseca shipped its first Vintage Port to London in 1840, and by the mid-19th century had established the House’s wines as some of the most sought after in England. In 1874, they began to ship Crusted Port for the first time and they remain one of the few Houses to still produce this style today.
This rich, velvety single quinta Vintage Port is made entirely from the produce of Quinta do Panascal. These are a pure expression of the estate’s terroir. Like Guimaraens Vintage Ports, they are made in years producing softer more approachable wines which do not need to be cellared for a long time before being enjoyed. Located on the steep right bank of the Távora River, Panascal is one of the most highly reputed vineyards in the Douro Valley.
Produced using Touriga Nacional, Touriga Francesa, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca and Tinta Cão grapes, the nose is cassis and black cherry with molasses and dark chocolate. As it develops, notes of damson and plum followed by aromatic herbs and exotic notes of black pepper and sandalwood.
On the palate the wine’s rich luscious fruitiness combines with the close grained and wonderfully integrated tannins to produce an unrestrained eruption of texture and flavour. The opulent black fruit flavours are seemingly endless and are lifted by a zesty freshness on the finish.
Pair with a good Stilton or dark bitter chocolate.
