Made from 45 year old vines in Villafranca del Bierzo, the heart of the region, where the Mencia vines grow on slopes at altitudes of 450-700 m.
The grapes are selected in the vineyard and harvested by hand at optimum ripeness. They undergo 48 hours of maceration at 8ºC. Alcoholic fermentation occurs over 6-10 days at 28ºC and malolactic over 5-9 days at 19ºC. The wine remains in stainless steel tanks on its fine lees for 2 months before ageing for 8 months in French oak barrels.
This results in an award winning wine (James Sucking - 90 points) that is deep cherry red with purple hues. The nose is full of aromas of black fruit with notes of tar, pencil shavings and spices.
On the palate there is a fresh acidity which is well balanced with a slight fruity sweetness and a touch of oak. More medium bodied, the wine has good minerality and a long fruity finish.
Pair with Tapas, Lamb and pasta dishes.
